"Portrait Suitcases"

Here are some of the finished..."portrait suitcases"...
Luis is such a hard worker with a good attitude...some of his items
include a fish for his love of fishing, a rosary for his religious beliefs,
and pictures of Messi, a favorite soccer player.
Diana takes a lot of pride in her work...some of her items include
favorite singers, soccer ball representing her favorite sport, and a
                       cross for her religious beliefs.
Jenniffer is very creative...she took time to add some finishing
                        decorating touches to her suitcase.
Eric did a great job on his suitcase...a unique touch was the way
he did his name with letters linked together on wire...he worked
                      hard on this project.

"Portrait Suitcases" by 21st Century Students

Students in my 21st Century Class at Cedar Shoals just completed a mixed-media project
entitled, "Portrait Suitcases". The project was inspired by George Davidson, a local Athens
artist, who believes each of us has a unique journey in life. Students' "suitcases" are made
from cigar boxes from the International Cigar Company. They chronicled the story of their
lives using a variety of items...charms, pictures, jewelry...items that had a special
meaning. Take a peek at this creative journey...

21st Century Students at Cedar Shoals Unit on Uganda

The students in my 21st Century Jewelry-Making Class at Cedar Shoals just completed a unit on Uganda. The Bead for Life organization allows Ugandan women and children to sell their wares in the Fair Trade Federation. This is a wonderful program that helps producers earn wages and lifts families out of extreme poverty. Their beads become income for housing, medical expenses, food, etc. The women also sell shea butter, jewelry, and peppermint lip balm. My students made jewelry from these wonderful beads made from recycled paper, researched web sites to find more ways to help eradicate extreme poverty, and completed writing assignments related to the topic. For more information, go to www.beadforlife.org

Bohemian, Gypsy, Hippie...A Rose By Any Other Name

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet..."
Shakespeare

This is one of my favorite lines from "Romeo and Juliet"...whether we call the design bohemian, gypsy, hippie...the look is the same. I love the BOHO look of today...a reminder of a time in my life that recalls wonderful, bittersweet memories...days of patched jean shorts, embroidered flowing tops, flip flops...carefree days...days of first love.
Back then, it was mostly about the look...the clothing...not the jewelry. The BOHO look of today...lots of chains, beaded earrings, bold color...and, yes...still...embroidered tops, funky headbands, and color...the look is the same...just by a different name. And the peace symbol?
Yes, it was around, too!
